Exhibition Work

I am inspired by the many amazing women who have achieved their goals and dreams, and carved out a place for themselves in a world still very much dominated by men. Their stories, struggles for change, and triumphs, are in themselves a wonderful legacy of what can be achieved, and an inspiration to generations of younger women.   All these women have a common theme to their struggles – social justice – and they have achieved this in their own unique ways.   I grew up in Africa and now live in Britain, and many of these women have worked on improving the lives of people in Africa and other poor nations.   Their life work resonates within me.

We have come so far, and to retell their stories is a privilege.  I hope that my portraits will give you pause to reflect on the achievements of women everywhere.  I realise my portraits are just paintings of their faces, but it is their stories that have greater significance, and so for that reason I have assigned them a single descriptive word that, I feel, defines the essence of each of them. It is with love, respect and appreciation that I have painted them, and with gratitude for their economic, political and social achievements which touch us all.

Queen Elizabeth II 'Duty'

I have assigned the word 'DUTY' to our Queen because of her unflinching steadfast commitment to the roles she has been given in her life. She is our Queen and at aged 90 she is the longest-reigning British monarch and longest-reigning queen regent and female head of state in world history.
